Navodayans, We require some Introspection!

Posted by Rewa Smriti on June 30, 2016

Dear All,

I would like to bring to the notice of my Navodaya brothers and sisters a few things here for self-appraisal. Its not that I am against anybody nor am I trying to demean anyone here. This is just my view and I always have been working this way. I am not follower of anyone, but I try to evaluate the right way, taking guidance wherever necessary, and propose the same for everyone else. Seeing the present state of Navodayans, I would like to talk about a few things here.

I have always felt that my navodaya family is doing something different which makes us feel proud and it gives us a sense of satisfaction but seeing few recent activities…it does not give me any pride nor do I appreciate such things. Pardon me if anybody is getting hurt reading this post. I am happy if anyone among you does any kind of activities for uplifting a navodayan’s life and I really admire such kinds of activities. But I discourage activities meant for momentary pleasures as they are not going to be helpful for our family in any way. If anybody is earning enough money, please value that money and invest it to help others rather just going to any five or seven star hotels to have alumni meet. We have such beautiful and large campuses in front of which five or seven star hotels have no value. At personal level you are free to do so. No one will object you…but our vision is getting diluted and I feel that we are lacking the guidance and going on the wrong track.

Secondly, the news of my brothers and sisters fighting with each other over petty issues and getting divided is also disheartening. The vision of Navodaya has National Integration as one of its pillars, and our conduct needs to be in consonance with our vision. Our opinions may differ, but the sense of being related needs to continue. So, here we require some introspection!

Hence I propose a few things here:

  1. We are all aware that JNV works to select talented rural children as the target group and attempts to provide them with quality education. Keeping this in view, we need to organize our get-togethers and other activities in a simple but profound manner and that too in our own campuses so that as many students as possible can get benefited and feel inspired.
  2. We need to work on our mutual relationships so that we work in an integrated manner, rather than getting divided as we have been taught to work for national integrity and this has been the vision of entire Navodaya.
  3. We need to expand our activities to other needy children of the society, and not restrict ourselves to only Navodayans. So our activities will be by Navodayans but for the entire Nation.
  4. We have a huge manpower, but we need to devise ways to utilize our potential in the right direction, rather than spoiling it over our own conflicts!
  5. We can make a team of guardians made up of experienced teachers/ principals/ commissioners/ deputy commissioners who will keep guiding us and evaluating our performance from time to time. For example: Nageshwar Rao sir, Rama Rao sir, Ramchandra sir, Ashok Shukla sir, Girish sir, Ali sir, D K Modi sir and many more…
  6. We can invite eminent personalities of the society for giving talk to our team which will not only enthuse them but also make us dream big for the society and nation.

It is only a proposal from me. You may agree or disagree with me over these points, and hence I invite suggestions from you for open discussion.

Rights in democracy!…Is it the ‘Right Time’…?

Posted by Rewa Smriti on February 14, 2013

We were taught in the school the definition of democracy: – “government of the people, by the people, for the people” and we keep listening about our rights. In today’s world people are well aware of their rights. Gone are the days when adjustments were made to accept “wrong” things, but now we see many examples where in people express what they want and they stand for it.

The teaching and non-teaching staff of over 590 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNV) in the country is on an indefinite strike since Wednesday.  And more than 3000 JNVians are there at Jantar Mantar today.

I appreciate our teachers for standing up for their rights, and I believe it would inspire the students of Navodaya to learn more about democracy and at times the NEED to question the authority. We value our teachers, just as they value the education of all the students. We, the JNV Alumni, always honor and respect our teachers for the extraordinary work they do to build our future.

I support that teachers have the right to raise their voice and bring up their genuine concerns as before being a teacher, they are people having responsibility of their families. I understand that the teachers went on a strike for their genuine reasons, which I myself respect.  School is important, so are teachers’ rights and these rights should not be denied to anyone.

However, I would say that this is not the right time to go on a strike as 12th class students have their board exams and their future depends on it. This is the time they need their teachers’ support and guidance more. I would request them to understand that while they are on strike, students are at great loss, which in turn is denying students their right to education. My point is that this strike might not solve everything, but would leave a lot of anger, grievances and disappointment for both, teachers as well as students.

Notably, if we speak in numbers, it would be more than 4000 class 12th students who would be affected by this strike. With due respect, I would request all my teachers to find a solution as soon as possible as somebody is waiting for their support and guidance to build future.

On a positive note I got the information in the morning that class 12th students wouldn’t get affected by any means. All the required arrangements have been made for them.

Suggest the month for Get Together@JNV Katihar in 2012!

Posted by Rewa Smriti on July 9, 2012

Dear All,

The Navodaya story needs no introduction. Neither does one need to quantify the extraordinary efforts that this institution has been putting to provide a platform of growth for innumerable rural youth across India. Those who have had the fortune of transiting from childhood to adolescence in this cradle, cherish the time spent there as one of the best years of their life. Time unfolds another year but memories keep you ever near…

Many times it’s our actions, not just our words that really speak what our heart feels.  I am sure many of us fondly call Navodaya as our second family. Let us not forget our responsibilities and duties towards this family.  It’s high time we put in efforts to contribute to its betterment, so that many more like us can cherish similar or better experiences, for many more years to come.

Many of us have already been giving so much back to the Navodaya family and have been contributing in various ways to this society. Furthering the same efforts, we are planning for a Get-Together at JNV Katihar, Bihar. It is being planned as a two day event. We need each one of you, so we request everybody to come forward and kindly suggest months /dates for Get-Together so that we can ensure maximum turnaround.

Let us all brainstorm to zero down a best set activities to be conducted in two days to ensure that we have sufficient interaction with the administration/students to understand the challenges that they face and discuss among ourselves to dwell on how and where can we make ourselves useful for them. While, doing all this, let’s also keep scope for ourselves to live those lovely days once again.

We would appreciate if you could all pour your ideas regarding anything and everything about this event. Let us spend enough time and chalk out the most effective plan. We value your opinion and would appreciate your kind feedback and support in whatever form.

JNV Katihar: A Call for Coordinators!

Posted by Rewa Smriti on June 22, 2012

Dear Alumni of JNVKatihar,

We are sure each one of us has learnt a lot and must have lived life to the fullest when we were in JNV Katihar. While some of the alumni are still in the midst of completing their studies, rest of them must be doing well in their respective fields. I know that if given a chance, all of us would be willing to go back to the same nest – our JNV Katihar. Just give it a thought and recollect the golden memories of golden days!

I know that at present we are all very depressed due to the death of our beloved Iqbal sir, but we must not forget his honest, selfless and sincere service to JNV Katihar. We all love him and “Love cannot remain by itself — it has no meaning. Love has to be put into action, and that action is SERVICE,”  Mother Teresa said. This is the time for us to initiate our services to give back to the same society from which we have achieved so much, may be not only financially, but also in many other ways.

We cordially invite alumni of JNV Katihar from each batch to act as coordinators for our beloved JNV and its students. If you believe that you have something to offer – be it ideas, suggestions, guidance, leadership, management skills, mentoring students, helping school and its management, we welcome you! However, we must not forget that social service should not be by force, but by willingness, desire and commitment. And unquestionably, well behaved, humble and knowledgeable should be the key qualities of a Navodayan to take this responsibility.

Those who want to take the responsibility of representing their class/batch, please let us know. Two/Three persons from each class will be ideal to coordinate with their class friends. This will enable the continuity of the activities in case any coordinator is unable to make himself/herself available to fulfill the responsibilities. Also, there are different kinds of tasks; however, each coordinator will have an option to take the responsibility as per their area of expertise. Last but not the least, we strongly encourage girls’ representation from each batch!

Below are some of the responsibilities to start with:

1. The alumni (referred as coordinators from here on) representing their class will coordinate between (a) class friends of the school (b) the present students & (c) Teachers & staffs of the JNV Katihar, and are expected to undertake the responsibility of coordinating with other alumni of their batch for the events and meets organized by the alumni from time to time.

2. Coordinators are requested to visit their school regularly at least twice in a year and keep others updated about the school progress. In case the coordinators are unable to go, they may inform us well in advance so that we can send other representatives who are well aware of the requirements there.

3. Coordinators must be willing to establish a good network and healthy relations with the School management. It will help in managing counselling sessions, medical camps and other events.

4. Coordinators must be willing to give 2 hours/week of their quality time in interacting with their class/batch mates in person or through internet/social networking or phone calls.

5. Coordinators are requested to raise funds on behalf of their batches in case of genuine needs. In case of severe necessity, they may collect some small amount for the welfare of the students of JNV Katihar.

6. We will also ‘Adopt-a-village’ and plan to send the alumni, counselors and doctors, who will provide free medical check-ups, guide the students, train the people and organize workshops for villagers. Coordinators will be responsible for coordinating and communicating with respective participants.

These initiatives are dedicated to our beloved Iqbal sir and Madan sir. We will have monthly conferences to review the status of all our efforts and plan further progress accordingly.

Note that we are starting it with JNV Katihar in Patna Cluster/Region on a trial basis, but we will eventually expand it to other clusters/regions. We have definite plans to expand our activities towards navodaya family and village development and hence we surely need each others helping hands. For any further information, questions or if you have any doubts about the description, please do not hesitate to contact us. Looking forward to hearing from you! You may kindly mention your name, your batch with the year you joined the school here or mail to us.
