    Hey Dear Navodians

Let me take this opportunity to share with you, an old memory of our navodaya time in JNV-Paprola.

JNV-Paprola, which has been now shifted to the new campus near the main Bazar, was located in the hills of Dhauladhar Valley, near Baijnath, in the Kangra District of Himachal Pradesh, during the early 10 years after its establishement. Near the bank of Binwa-river and surrounded by the beautiful green hills, the scenetic beauty of JNV-Paprola was really mind blowing. Then in front of the main buliding, the Big building of the old highschool, big mango trees near the Girl’s hostel, the Gliding scenes on the neighbouring hills to the back side of the main buliding, and the State Basket ball Court, were enhancements in its ever-green natural beauty.

It was a summer morning about 11:00 AM, 15 mnt break time, and people were as usually scattered all around the campus; some geathered around the popular Chaudhary’s ‘samosa’ shop, some around the hand- pump, some sitting beneath a beautiful-big Fern Tree on the stage steps and gosseping, some of them murmuring to see the beautiful gals walking on the playground, some of them playing ‘the pithu’ in the playground, some even querreling around the bushes near mess, some of them having chat with Goswami madam n Daveer-Ul-Haqq Sir, the whole scene looked so beautiful. But, at the same times as you already know navodian guys are very smart and mischievious, some among us were trying to do omething very different by putting mud in the eyes of rest, let me tell you how.

I was in 9th class at that time, n one of my 1 year junior friend Kushal (the biggest chapati thief of our JNV), had a crush on his beautiful classmate Sonia. And he told me about this and ask for help, he wanted to propose her. He was so clever that he convinced me for the help. I told him to write a letter to Sonia on a page n give it to me so that whenever I find a n appropriate chance, I will give his Love letter to Sonia. We decided to keep it a top secret. During the 15mnt break time, I aksed Kushal to tell me about where the Sonia’s school bag was located. I looked around for the safeside no body was there to see me n I put the Love letter in her school bag and ran like a rabbit fearing from the hunt. Kushal seriously appreciated my effort (haha) and I was feeling like I had got a big success but unaware of the near future moments. On the very next day Kushal was called by Deepshikha didi, for the query! Kushal was feard at once and he came to me. To see this I was also feard n feeling guilty. Some how we managed to have courage and went to meet Deepshikha didi behind the Girl’s hostel. Sonia was also there. Deepshikha didi asked Kushal for why he wrote the letter to Sonia and scolded him (like a terrorist) coz the little girl Sonia was scared n weeping (hehe…so innocent we were at that time!). I pretended to be wise and pointed out Kushal to be the culprit in fnont of them n asked him to say sorry to Sonia and to make promise not to repeat it again in future…I didn’t disclose the fact that I was also involved in provoking his attention…hehe. I requested them not to disclose this matter to others. Really we could not sleep well for few days after we realized our mistake haha….Just Imagine!!! if we could be sweet n innocent even today like that time!! This simple incident was enough to create panic in ourselves…..so funny it was!!!

    Thanks and Regards

When Hardhyan Singh was Driven to Death By “Binwa”

It was a rainy season July, 1990, I was in 6th class and we, the JNV-Paprola people were living in a hired building near Burli Kothi. At that time we were facing several problems in navodaya, the one major problem arose when our Principal INDERJEET ordered the “Chawaliya” to lock all the toilets in the Boys hostel ! All among us had no way other than to go to the near by Binwa river to have open WC in a wide-space midway in the river and water flowing on the both side of this space. Since JNV-Paprola is located in a hilly area, the water in the Binwa flows at a very fast speed due to the sharp slope. Even in absence of any flood, its difficult to cross it. And whenever flood comes in Binwa, it comes all of a sudden.

It was around 7:00 AM, mild rain and as usually I went to be fresh to the Binwa river. Around 7:20 I came back, and at around 7:25 a severe flood came there in Binwa. And also the local Train was on the way at this moment on the near by hill. Around 9:00 AM in the assembly, all were found to be present except for one student of 9th class Hardhyan bhaiya. Our house master Davir-Ul-Haq Sir asked us to look him in the hostel but in vain. Hardhyan was not found anywhere! Then this news was spreaded like a storm in whole of the school that Hardhyan might have ran away to his home without informing the Housemaster as JNV people usually used to do so some times. But when his parents and other realtives were contacted, it was found that Hardhyan was notwith them too. Then some of the students started telling Haq Sir who had see Hardhyan in the morning. A student had seen Hardhyan going to the Binwa river by holding an umbrella around 7:20. Then after nobody registered to have seen him! Then where did he go ? All were much worried about him and no body wanted to accept that Hardhyan could have been flown down by the flood.

Since now our effort in searching him had failed, there was no way other than to search him down along the river. Now the rumour of his death started spreading all around in the town as well. Some people told that when they were working in the crop fields near binwa river, they had seen a boy with umbrella to be flawn by the river around 7:30 AM on the day when Hardhayan was found missing. But because of the heavy flood, they could not save him. After listening this, we started believing that Hardhyan bhaiya was no more with us. All of a sudden the clouds of grief covered whole of the JNV-Paprola. And it was obvious that our Principal was responsible for all this. What he did now, asked the workers to open up the toilets of the Boys hostel before the Police could come ! In front of Police he told “I have not allowed any student to go to the Binwa river, toilets are available in the campus for use, it was Hardhyan’s mistake as he went to the river!”

When we came to know this statement all navodians set a hunger strike for the justice and demanded punishment for the culprit — our Principal !
On the 7th day of search, only clothes surrounding some bones and Skull were found which the Parents of Hardhyan identified to be of their son. It was really a very much emotional scene when his mother and father were weeping. Our strike went own till evening when the Principal was immediately transfered to some JNV in Punjab. We asked his parents to file the case against our Principal after telling them about the reality. But they said “we have lost our son, for whom we would fight ?” They never filed a case and went back with grief only.

I remember one day before we lost him, I had a chat with Hardhyan bhaiya and he gave me PRASHAD of the Dera, Radha Soami Satsang Beas. Though he was senior to me, he was a very good friend of mine. Hardhyan bhiaya was famous in our school for his beautiful drawing and paintings, he was really an extraordinary painter. Also Many times we used to exchange comics…but now only memories had remained with us. We had lost our dear-lovely brother. We were sad because we could not do anything to punich the culprit. At the moment I remember these lines:

Yaaaden reh jaati hain din guzar jaate hain
dekhte hi dekhte hare bhare baag uzzad jaate hain
waqt ke haathon ka kathputli hota hai insaan
jeevan bhar ke humsafer pal bhar mein bichhud jaate hain….

  20. Hi friends,

Gour is doing fantastic job by collecting money and sending it to small NGO that are actively involved in relief operation. We feel that it is time to support and assist smaller NGOs. NGOs with big name and strong backing can source their finance easily. So we must focus on small NGOs who are eager to earn the name and establish themselves. We must find such small NGO or self help groups.

  38. Dear Navodayans,

I am putting the link of a blog very beautifully written by one of my younger navodaya brothers, Rahul Singhai, which is a bright sign of optimism in our young generation. We need to work hard to actualize the long cherished change in our country.

Kindly find the whole article appended below:

Wait for 20 Years & you will see Change in INDIA…

Title is difficult to understand, so expanding it a bit..

Talking about year 1997, These are the words told by our respected History Teacher in class 10th. At that age it was a kind of bouncer for us but I felt a longer sense of vision in it. Somehow, I have kept them in my little cerebrum. In fact, my teacher might also not be able to explain it to us at that moment.

I am brought up in Navodaya Vidyalaya Hatta,Distt Damoh and I can proudly say “I born again in Navodaya”. I interacted with many people from various region of our diverse India. Education in Navodaya is far better than other schools in our surroundings. We have been taught not only bookish knowledge rather it was complete mix of Humanity, Integration,Values,Management and many such things which are more useful and significant in day to day life. When we were in Navodaya, we never felt where we are heading to. What will this education give us? However, One thins was sure that we had capability to change the world around us because we were always ready to change ourselves. We have seen India very closely, the incredible India as well depriving India. Our Nation needed a change. But the people who were handling it and governing it, not holding those qualities. And here comes the meaning of the title.

We the student, if given a correct education and taught the lessons on Humanity and Integration then definitely, India will emerge as a real Incredible India. But the today’s student will be capable enough to hold the power only after a certain age. It means after 20 years from then. So that was the vision behind those words. If we have been taught lessons on Integration and other outgrowing qualities at the younger age then that will give India a bright future.

And I have to say, now this is the time to prove those words right. We just have to start now. Many of us are enough capable to bring some differences in India. Yes, We the Navodiyan have those qualities which can do anything at par.

Yes, I can see around 20,000 students are passing every year from our great Navodaya, full flegded with education and noble thoughts. And believe me, all of them are rocking wherever they are working. Even the person who became a primary teacher after class 12th. He/She has been proven himself/herself the best in that area. I can not negate the fact that many of us already working towards brightening of India. But the count is countable. So, We need to be united and work on it.

Wait for 20 Years & you will see Change in INDIA…

    – Rahul.

    Regards,
    Rewa Smriti
