Emotions are one of our avenues to self-understanding!

Posted by Rewa Smriti on October 12, 2011

Recently, I came across a person who passed the statement as quoted;

A person, who understands the whole society as his family and accepts everybody with one eye, ‘has higher sense of emotion’.

The above little statement raises so many questions, psychological questions, philosophical questions, and existential questions even. First and foremost, I would like to ask such person that ‘Do you really understand yourself‘?

A person, who claims to understand a society, may not be a person who really understands the society. In order to understand the society, first it is necessary to understand an individual who is the basic unit, from which the society is built. A person, who doesn’t understand an individual, is it right for him/her to claim that he/she can understand the entire society?

John D. (Jack) Mayer says, “Emotions operate on many levels.  They have a physical aspect as well as a psychological aspect.  Emotions bridge thought, feeling, and action – they operate in every part of a person, they affect many aspects of a person, and the person affects many aspects of the emotions.” I do believe that emotions do not define us, they are a form of inner communication that help us to understand ourselves. “Emotions control our thinking, behavior and actions”!

However, it has left me thinking that a person who doesn’t understand an individual’s emotions, how can be expected from him/her to unravel the entire wave of the society’s sentiments, if he/she is not able to hold on to ‘a single thread of emotion! It is ‘the emotion’ that play a vital role in our lives, and even more so in self improvement, and with emotion, our true power of intention will shine all the way through. Most important, “Emotions are one of our avenues to self-understanding!

I have experienced that mostly such people who claim such thing, on the contrary, have an absolute absence or an unacceptable low degree of emotional quotient!  Some of them also go to the extent of claiming that they are people who perceive the whole society as their family and accept everybody with one eye. I believe, they need to open second eye as well and see themselves more clearly.

Likewise, there are a bunch of intellectuals, so called progressive thinkers who claim to be a Gandhian or yet Gandhi him/herself of the modern era – just by wearing khadi or holding on to a notion that they are Ghandiji re-incarnated. Eh, just can’t see the Gandhi yet! Gandhi perceived wearing white khadi cloths as a sign of peace, love, self esteem and over all, a sense of respect. But does that mean anybody donning a khadi kurta could represent Gandhian ideology?

Furthermore, unfortunately, there is duality in what they think and what they do – rather a mismatch in what they perceive and what they act. Their often repeated mantra is “vashudhaiv kutumbakam” (The whole world is a family), which in actuality becomes nothing but a laughable joke of the life for them.  They ‘do not practice what they preach’. They talk about peace while pointing the gun at others. Such people are dangerous- quite normal from outside, but confused from within. And, these complicated double-faced people may “rub you the wrong way“. I call them “hypocrites”! And moreover, a person cannot escape the label of “hypocrite” by saying he or she is only offering a suggestion to other people. And above all, such hypocrites are not fit to call themselves civilized; they may be from any parts of India or world, I don’t care. Nevertheless, their confined thinking & filthy mind reminds me Agyeyji’s poem which I read in school text book (cbse). I am quoting below as it might fit well here.

Now, the question is – Are they really able to understand the whole society- its composition, intricacies, human bonds??

Absolutely not! One needs to open both the eyes to understand whole society.  I know, nothing can prevent anyone from claiming what he or she is claiming. It’s a free world and anybody can interpret anything they like. Yet, it’s far from easy to understand such people who live their whole lives in a largely illusory world of unquestioned assumptions. I must emphasize that claims are useless until shaped by ‘good intentions’ and followed by equally ‘good actions’!

Excuse me! I repeat, please don’t ever try to impose your fundamental thoughts, rigid expectations and beliefs on others!

One can understand the society (not whole society) but it is not necessary for an individual who understand the society, can understand those feelings, the emotions.

I would like to add few more things here, although this article seems perfectly appreciably composed and opinion is so exact.

First thing is this If somebody claims something that he/she understand any thing completely, it is his/her biggest mistake. Because something is known to us by day to day experience and every day we add to this thing called “knowing”. Yes If somebody says he/she has completely understand society it is like whatever he/she has experienced about society, by living in his/her own surrounding and conditions. He may be totally wrong or right, but who will decide that his thinking is wrong or right? That will be decided by relativity, like whatever any terrorist does is wrong for our society but is right for his/her society. As a crux I would just say a person can never be wrong or right only his/her beliefs are, and that too is relative.

Second most thing, comes “emotion” on very little emphasis is given although mentioned about it at some places specifically at some points in the article. Emotion is nothing but the MEDIUM to experience society which includes all from every aspect of individual to its society. A person who things wrongs things [wrong according to us] for society, it doesn’t mean he/she has lost this medium called emotion only thing that has got changed is the angle of perception, the point from where one thinks or from where one’s thinking originates. This also depends on surrounding and society, which modulates ones emotions for any thought/person/place/society.

Finally, There is a synchronized reversible feedback loop between “ones thinking” and “society or surrounding” and the extent of this interaction is regulated by emotion.

a very pertinant question is raised by rewa.to begin with I would project certain terminologies which are linked to society!social ettiquittes, social stigma, social control, social movement———–and many more. Each of these terms affirm a picture of society which indicates the existence of a vast group affecting your individual self! we follow certain norms in society not always by our own desire but to present a set of behaviour in front of all but self. It is just like presence of a magnetic needle in the viccinty of a strong electric field. And emotion! emotion is purely personal, obscure, isolated and very much original. Now if we try to view the emotions of this big aggregation of diverse individuals we would find that those are also not original but merely a projection of a swing erupting out of thoughts of a strong group.often some people attempt to ignite emotions of the big group but are discarded and labeled as poets! I quote a vetern thespians movie lining which speak:
    में और मेरी तन्हाई अक्सर बातें करतें हैं
the simple message in it is emotion promote thinking which is the best form of self introspection.Todays fracas essentiate that we sporadically bunk society and be our own self in sylvan mileu of the emotions gaining constructive enrgies to ornament a worth living world.I shall congratulate the chain of efforts initiated by Rewa and I am sure if not revolution there would be a good social evolution by her step initiated. All the very best

    Quest begets quest…

Frankly speaking, what am I expected to understand about myself and the society?

What are the dimensions of altruism that I am supposed to inculcate?

Do I need to care my needs or the demands of society out of me?

Do I need to bother hypocrites when I could recognize them as hypocrites?

How many versions of mentalities does co exist here?

Altruism vs selfishness in such a society where exist detailed division of labour and complex cooperation between genetically unrelated individuals ?

My opinion is that, being natural is the best thing you can do the society. It works well. That is nature’s evolutionary point of view. Be the same human, the animal. It climbed these many stairs and did cross the ages by being the social animal. Can anyone say that, we have better social skills than we had it in ancient times? It’s better to remain genuine. We do have desires. And we do have the natural instincts and curiosities. Let’s realize the good life and explore it in a creative way.

Sometimes I do wonder that how much complex metabolism and genomic regulations are going on in our body at any given moment. But nature gifted us this mind to celebrate the life, leaving all the process involuntary. We cannot deny ours or some ones basic needs. Where this kind of exploitations or scarcity happens, there arises the low profile society.

Altruism is a noble thought. One study says that, “depending on the environment, a minority of altruists can force a majority of selfish individuals to cooperate or, conversely, a few egoists can induce a large number of altruists to defect. So let’s be natural and let the nature pursuit its quest.

Once I got the opportunity to attend lecture on human evolution. So I scribbled the perception of Prof. Ajit Varki’s talk (Univ of California SD) in this way.

Mind the mind, but not phenome

Heave on humanity of genealogical tree
Hold the hominian mind over the epochs

For untold tales of survival and altruism
And revive the outlay of all mortal needs

Recur, incubate insight and brew intuition
Hurl up hardwired self, softly wired weird emotions
To stature the lost instincts and mislaid senses

Let plasticity of mind swim upstream
And deal the denial of all mortal needs

  12. First of all thanks for visiting my blog and commenting positively. your visits and comments are most welcome.

    About the article above,
I do not know in what context the person Quoted the statement. This is not new but a fundamental statement of all the philosophies .Love each one as yourself or the god or atman that resides in you . I know it is very hard but one has to just keep trying and you can do it. Feel for the other as if you are in his shoes. Even if we try this so many problems in today’s world can be overcome. you then can understand yourself better too.

This is a high level philosophical topic. For me it was quite tough to understand the article. The reason I never thought what is my emotion quotient. Thanks for writer to analysis myself. Then i realized that My emotions are not mirror image of my actions. The same is with most of person. The action always comes as per environment and role you play in the society/organization. But emotion is a natural outcome of your thinking and upbringing in the society. We can never claim that we understand the complete society. This is not possible to take your actions with due respect to every individual emotions. The claim and blame game is the part of every society. Lets not focus on claims and blames rather put our positive energy towards the positive action which is based on our emotions.

  14. We play different roles and show multiple emotions which varies even person to person, relation to relation. What I believe is that we act and behave differently in society and when confronted with an individual.A person can love and show empathy to the society but the same person might not help the needy neighbor.Because of personal animosity and family feud.We become cautious when in society but open up in closed circuit. This happens to all.Topic is debatable and will remain so forever,

    Regards.

No! I didn’t exactly target the politicians this time. You may include them too, I don’t mind!

The statement shown here, is eventually made by some so called ‘fundamentalists’ (religious, ethnic, political, ideological, philosophical etc.), who are called “impossible” for a reason or “pretend to be better” than he/she really is!

well said Nidhi ji 🙂 there is a saying, a friend to all is friend to none, specially some relations do have its own priority so we cant treat everyone with same eye. specially spouse, parents brothers. you will have emotions with one with whom you are damn close, with whom you expect a lot, you wont expect anything if he doesn’t mean anything to you. you cant have emotions with all, your emotions says lot of unsaid things to the one who mean so much to you. you will get hurt if you have some emotions. but hurt completes everything. small imperfections makes things memorable. people start to understand you when they start to respect your emotions, you will get to know more about yourself when you realize what your emotions towards others mean. emotions are one of avenues to self understanding.

This is a good article. I love how all of your articles have such a personal touch, even on topics like this one.

‘A person, who understands the whole society as his family and accepts everybody with one eye, ‘has higher sense of emotion’.’

I don’t believe it’s right. The problem with such smart people is that they like to be right and sometimes consciously or unconsciously, tend to give lots of unnecessary advice and leave you with an uneasy feeling, even if you don’t know why! When, in actuality, they have no conscience, they have no humanity, they are very, very selfish. I don’t have anything more to say about it.

People with double standards may be successful at times (in their intended/ desired work) but, in the longer they may not …. Such people depend on someone else’s opinion all the time nd they can hardly be sensible.so we should be careful of dealing with such people. I really don’t like the double standard.

double standards means the one who is having double side ? or the one who is meant ? somewhere…. i feel you mean to say the one who tries to be diplomatic in all way , mean the one who pretends himself as he is good in front of you and he even pretends that he is good with others when he is in front of others !! , emotions do differ from person to person, but its up to us to catch our frequency. to make sure that we are not becoming pray for someone else trick. its we have to make sure that our emotions/ or feelings are not becoming someone else toys for his/her game.

You got the right point. I consider them mental health disabilities! Its very obvious that a lot more than people are willing to admit the fact that the hypocrisy and double standard doesn’t end here. Such people are pathetic and they need to be viewed as an uneducated.

Narcissists don’t have emotions. These types of people always play trick with the emotional people. However, usually our feelings are right but we are being manipulated by such diplomatic people.

“Emotions are one of our avenues to self-understanding!“ A line truly said.

Quite nice and meaningful Article. Most people don’t understand the individual but they claim to understand the whole society. I can not understand it and can never accept it. Some people feel uncomfortable with those who express strong emotions. This is for the simple reason that we ourselves do not understand what we are. We are a society that is taught to hide our emotions, to be embarrassed of them or to be scared of them.

“u cnt treat ur spouse jst like u treat d world.if u do so u r nt doing justice nd u r biasd, influencd by som.
ur partnr is nt like a smll piece of tissue paper!”

Well said, Nidhi. You said very well, and I agree. A person cannot treat his spouse the same way he treat other people. Such persons perhaps do not know what caring/loving for their spouse the right way means. They may think that their commitment to care for their spouse would be sufficient to maintain their love. Emotions are like children, which should not be suppressed or ignored. It is our emotion that is most responsible for our survival. So if it is ignored, it become more louder.
