Do we need pub culture at all?

Posted by Rewa Smriti on February 8, 2009

One can not defend the pub culture on the basis of equal rights! The idea of ‘rights’ and ‘equal rights’ has to be understood fundamentally. Do we need this kind of culture to ensure equality for women? Fact is, this has nothing to do with equal rights for women. How do we explain this to our kids when we don’t understand the logic of equality?

Why do people feel compelled to defend themselves against things? Why do we always blame west and western culture for everything? Why we never want to adopt their good things for the development of the nation? We need not blame western culture for everything. This is their tradition, so they are following. This we can not change, but we can make changes on our part!

I think pub culture should be banned! Everything has some limit, and you can not just close your eyes registered yourself as blind. When we say it is bad then it’s bad for all. So, it should be banned not only for girls but for all. There too need not be descrimintaion on the basis of gender!

Some believe that this economic growth will change the society. No way, I don’t know whether it’s fortunate or unfortunate but, it is yet to undergo a litmus test. Last but not the least, we must find a way to correct and handle the things in positive way!

Actually, I enjoy the fun in Pub. You forget everything about the rest of the world. Just chill-out and relax. 🙂

  2. Hmmm. . . . It is yet to undergo a litmus test or something else . . .

I also think these pubs and discos should be banned because they do not serve any purpose. This is an open society. I am not against anyone smoking or drinking at home. But it should be banned in public place without taking second thoughts. The root of this problem is the drinking culture, so nowhere should be allowed to sell alcohol.

The Shri Ram Sena attack is not for pub culture but for gaining the popularity. What they are talking for indian culture? Our culture does not teach us to beat females no matter what she is doing.

I think Indian women have become modern now and should not shy away from Pub culture and night club culture. The age old idea of ‘men can’ and ‘women cant’, anything for that matter is too outdated for the new modern generation. Let them enjoy pub culture.

Its true no one got the right to act on others freedom, but pub culture should be banned. I dont support these types of activities..today pub..tomorrow dance bar with drugs..its nice to see other girls dancing and drinking in pubs/bars..but no one want their children or relative sons/daughters in these types of activities.

The act by Sri Ram Sena was an unparliamentary, which no Indian should tolerate. Only they should not have taken laws in there hand. The arrest of Ram Sena chief is justified because he resorted to violence but at the same time the willingness of CM.Yedyruppa to curb pub culture is admirable.

GOOD or BAD, It depends on the you or us how we perceive this.
There is nothing wrong to have pub but the main challenge is how to maintain Indian values in PUB.

I have been to several PUB in different Asian as well as European country (Important to mention here that I drink alcohol very rarely and most of the PUB I visited for lunch /snacks) . Many PUB I visit is very decent where people are coming with there family and friend, they will have dinner/lunch or drink, relaxing or watching games or enjoying soft music.

Do you think if we put ban over the PUB the problem will solve?? and we able to save our Indian Value… You can say partially yes.. but how many these kind of things you will able to ban.. say for example.. why don’t we ban all movies which does not match with Indian values….
Take another example, Gujarat banned Alcoholic drink in his state but still you can find any sort of drink in black market, which is giving rise to lot of black money.
I we want to ban alcohol, we may need to take other step .. simply banning PUB is not solution.
Again, Banning means, we are suppressing freedom of the people and if we keep suppressing the freedom, this may have worse effect than this.

Even though, I hardy take alcoholic drink, I suppose simply baaing bar will not going to solve any problem or will contribute towards saving Indian Value.
This is purely my personal opinion………

    Hi All,

I think Pub Culture should be banned or not .i wont argue about it.
defending ownself our youth really knows very well but when it comes to doing something creative then everyone has own views. i am just asking one qstion forwhich India is known for thats our Culture civilization , does it permit us to do such wild things, whnever i think about this country i always find one thing common that people have misunderstood word liberty and every time they want right but not duty . i think our citizens should ask for right when they fulfill atleast some duty towards nations,

ITs not soultion just bann anything because with pressure you can change anything we have to change mindset of youth and their weird views which is promoting these things and it cant be just convincinng, one thing is i can put the blame thats socialisation of child becasue society has put up that impact so i will give whole credit to the media and society which has made these things so popular,
hey dear no one would recoginse us if we will leave our cultural valus becoz that gives us edge over others so alwasy remmeber one thing we should not forget own roots if oen tree forget its own root it must fall so
PUb Culture should be avoided not only for girls for all beacuae i am totally against the gender descrimination and as im pro girls so it should be banned for upper class first then for youth and this should not publicised. Beacause WHEN WE GO FOR THESE THINGS when our all needs satisfied really do you think Indian ppl need are satisfied its not our moral bindation we should give our effort for underpreviliged so taht thwey can also enjoy with you people, after then if you peopel will tell to accepth this culture then i will accept, Its just my own views so dear dont put blame.

Who will decide what is decent and what is not? Indian Culture allows women to do what they want. Women are learnig and earning by doing good jobs. They are independant so they are using freedom.

  12. Akhil said

Shutting down pubs is not the answer. It is the individual, whether boy or girl, to decide to go to a pub or bar.

Does pub culture attack on Indian Values? Does westernization eroding our values? Do we are moving towards cultural slavery?

The biggest problem is our ignorance towards our own civilization. There was time during Islamic rule when our culture was under attack, people were converted into Islam by force or by influence or some other way. Even our civilization was on down slide as priests were misguiding people on the name of God. At that time Tulsidas only wrote Ramayana and spreaded the word of Ramayana. Bhakti Andolan came which was enough to save the culture.

Sri Sri Ravishanakar and hundreds of gurus are playing the same role today. World are understanding the Indian Values. It is really shame for us that we don’t understand ourselves and our own civilization.

It is really shocking that we are in habit of remembering our worse part and importing the degraded values of west only. Let us put a thought, high light good Indian values by imparting those in our lives, weed out all bad values and you can import good values from west.

If there is something wrong happens in the society, due to counter effect people start tackling things in erratic manner. As poverty and oppression causes Naxalism and so attack on culture causes formation of group like Ram Sene.

Those who have attended pub as well as some satsang by some guru, will say the difference. And I know that well.

I know truth never vanish and so the Indian values and say basically human values.

Finally pub should be banned not for woman but also for man otherwise let it go. People will realize themselves.

Freedom?? It is being abused in the name of greater freedom.

We should ask the Women and Child Development Minister Renuka Chowdhury to worry about millions of poor children who are going without meeals evryday.

WHY FEMALES SHOULD BE BANNED TO GO TO PUBS..I WANT TO ASK RAM SENA THAT WHO GAVE THEM THE RIGHT TO PUNISH FEMALES OR TO BAN FEMALES IF THEY WANT TO GO TO PUBS BY THEIR OWN WISH…….

The women activists that has been protesting against these events. Feminist groups have been raising voice against the men drinking in the bars. How come girls ended up in Pub? Now it seems that men’s drinking began “to be regarded”!! 🙂

  24. Kiran said

It is changed now and both genders can work together on the problem.

Their are so many idiots like Ram sena people are protesting against pub culture that’s why there are some idiot women activists that has been protesting against these events for their publicity. Feminist groups have been raising voice against the men drinking in the bars what about those who drink at home. when people drink at home their kids are at home who see them drinking and may learn the same from their parents, or from their brothers, sisters.

I don’t see anything wrong in drinking in bars. We Indians will die in protesting against these small issues but will not concentrate in major issues like education, unemployment and terrorism in the country. In one hand we only encourage bribes to get our this done easily and other hand we protest against pub culture..

I STRONGLY DISAGREE AND I THINK PEOPLE PROTESTING AGAINST PUB CULTURE ARE RIDICULES…DISGUSTING AND REALLY REALLY CHEAP

IF PUB CULTURE IS NOT ACCEPTED IN INDIA THEN GIRLS WHO WEARS SLEEVE LESS TOP, JEANS, SKIRTS, AND RELATIONS WITH OTHER GUYS SHOULD ALSO BE TREATED AS SAME LIKE GIRLS IN PUB WERE TREATED…..

    Dear Promila Jha

We have to understand at this stage, it is important not to lose track of the human element. So young educated women should also know that if they are in pubs, there also they are not safe among the men sitting out there, in the name of making fun and independency for only missuse.

Yes, fight for equality but a better one, for better personality, for better confidence, for better career so that we could get a better society. Also, bring the change to thinking of a man.

Ram sena people should be given sever punishment for molesting women.

Its high time that each and every single men and women should understand that growing is not bad, a girl wearing jeans is not bad. For sure drinking in pubs/bar for both woman/men is bad so it should be banned.

In public school in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore and other places only 14-15 year girls are getting preganant. They are drinking and having sex. Even a 14 year teen aged girl telling, I have sex with my boy freind, I have no problem having pregant.

I am a doctor and I don’t suport abortions. You can’t understand how critical a situation we are facing.

  35. Hmmm. . . Dr.Ranjita’s statement is tru whatever i have seen too. Pub culture is destroying the morality. It should never be promoted at all.
And i have no objection with Promila’s weakened masti ,but there will be objection in mode of the masti.Actually if our will power are strong nothing wrong is going to happen, but this is not for our masti only. Beginid our activities there are hundreds of the growing mind that are future of our country. Apne lie to sab jite hain janwar bhi. . . . Par dunia ko dene ke lie kam. Aur bahut kuchh sambhal kar kia jata hai.
    Dear friends . .
I want to say a lot but have scarcity of time. So just make your goal leaving behind this pub culture.

    Regards ,

  38. I am surprised. People are trying to curtail the social freedom of an individual. Not at all acceptable.

People are talking about Indian culture. That is good, but we should not try to control it. Culture is uncontrollable. We can not keep culture alive by diktat. We have used culture to invent the world we live in. I think the need of hour is to have fluid and flexible culture in the “modern world with the new function of globalization”.

Some one has raised the valid point that we can not afford to have luxuries of pubs, discos, star hotels etc.. in the country where 35 % of population live below poverty line and 77% of population are not able to maintain the minimum living standard (As per world bank report). But my dear friend we are going to live in a free market economy where we can not deprive people from their luxuries. If we will try to see it from the other perspective, Government is trying to generate the huge income by slapping the huge taxes and tariffs on the high end luxuries and services. This money is getting pooled out from the high income community and can be used for overall development of the country. Definitely we need to promote the organizational as well as personal philanthropist for the social welfare but it should not be forced one.

“Some believe that this economic growth will change the society. No way, I don’t know whether it’s fortunate or unfortunate but, it is yet to undergo a litmus test.”

I will request to author to throw some light on above quote as I am not able to grasp the message out of it. As per my knowledge the economic growth may not be the only factor but one of the most important factors to bring some positive change in the society and it is tried and tested.

Before i say anything on pub culture i would like to say that first we badly need preparedness to adopt any culture successfully and understand its minus and plus points. At times we apt to dislike something because it is socially or professionally not possible with us.I implore upon one thing that controlled practice of everything is needed .
I now come on pub culture. It is said that the day must be full of slog so that the evening comes with a reward. If you have done your share of work in the day time like a genleman and you know to behave like a gentleman the pub culture or entry to it comes as a reward only. However you must appreciate medical and social limits.i with the conditions cited above support the pub culture.
