Lajjedaar Majjedaar!

Posted by Rewa Smriti on June 22, 2008

You know friends cooking is a kamal ki quality. Yeh aisa kamal dikhata hai ki log sochna chor khane per toot padte hein. It is one of my lovely hobbies even I had burnt myself many times while cooking.

Are you cooking now? If so then don’t forget lijjat papad! Hmmm…today I am pakka going to have it in lunch. 🙂

Yes got it…let me tell you about the success of India’s most popular crispy bread, my fav “Lijjat Papad”. The success of Lijjat Papad presents a great example to our rural women, that any dream can be true with strong will power and your complete devotion towards your goal. These seven women were not highly educated and they were not availed of much facilites to do it. Just a loan of 80Rs some 40 years ago and they bought all the basic things needed to make Papad. They started making papad at their terrace and today it’s a household name with annual sales exceeding Rs 301 crore.

It was started by seven women: Jaswantiben Jamnadas Popad, Parvatiben Ramdas Thodani, Ujamben Narandas Kundalia, Banuben, N. Tanna, Laguben Amritlar Gokani, Jayaben V. Vithalani, and I coudn’t find the name of one more lady.

It was not like that they did not face any problem, but from the beginning, the women had decided that they would not approach anyone for donations or help, even if the organization incurred losses. Also, in the first year only they had to stop making Papad for the four months as it was difficult to dry papad in rainy seasons, but they found a way for it also. They bought cot and stove so that they could continue their production in rainy season. Not only this, when the oraganization started having a good amount of profit, they tried to open their branches at several places, which was a failure, but this all couldn’t stop the organisation to grow. It is the sign of their dedication and confidence.

Hmmm….one more interesting fact about Lijjat Papad. Dhirajben Ruparel won prize of RS.5 to suggest this name (Lijjat), which means “ज़ायकेदार in gujrati.

Now for those women who don’t like cooking and hire maids, I suggest that it is the best thing ever, so do it!!!

And to the man who says, women are made for this so let them deal with it. I know one can’t be good in everything but if you have talent then you can learn it and try to be all rounder. You know, a pinch of everything makes the curry tasty!

Chalo ab bhukh lag gayi hai…..going to have lunch.

Yes needless to say that cooking is an essential part of our routine of course if one wants something of his/her desire to eat. How can we forget the ‘lijjat papad’….break fast, Lunch n dinner mein iski lazzat hi kuch aur hai. Thanks to the discoverers of this very special thing and thanks to the author who made us aware of those women. Hats off to such success-incarnates. We all should learn a lesson from these women that ‘hard work in a proper direction with full determination and devotion leads to success’. And yes modern men must also know cooking as its a very beautiful, interesting, and enjoying work that always bring blessings in one or other senses. So guys happy cooking to all of us. If you ask me, I like cooking very much since my childhood days……

    Keep Smiling Always

    Nice post.

But if you look at the process they make it, u probably won’t like to eat it again. Particularly, the way Papad r dried. In Muzaffarpur, I saw them drying on the road side, accumulating all the dust. There is a Lijjat Papad Factory in Muzaffarpur. Those poor women take Papad Atta to their home. You must be knowing how clean their homes r. It’s not fully hygiene, trust me.

I am not against of them. I like baked papad too much neglecting all the hygiene crap. It’s yummy 😉

  4. Lijaat PAPAD..LIJJAT PAPAD.. he he ho ..he he ho…. yummy taste increasing..ar gyan increasing post..

  7. @Ek Ajnabi, thanks for writing kind words here. Hmmm..so you like cooking very well! Great…by the way kuch banana aata bhi hai? 😉

@Abhay, yes; main kal khayi thee…yes those seven ladies were really great. They proved that if we have will power nobody can stop us. Chahe wo koi bhi ho, koi fark nahi padta…kyunki achha kaam karne walon ko achhon ka support mil hi jata hai.

  8. @Shubh, what you have mentioned is quite true and I know you are not against of it. It is not like that it is prepared by those poor ladies that’s why it’s not fully hygiene, even if you talk about lehar or other namkeens, coldrinks aur any branded chips, these all are not hygienic. There is nothing under hygiene and safety in market, but they remains the market leader today.

Anyway, kabhi-2 khane mein koi harz nahi hai isliye khane ka maza le lena chahiye. 🙂 Waise bhi ajkal to mummy sab bhi bahar ka khane nahi deti hai…bus ghar mein sab banane lagti hai.

Lijjat Papad a global brand name and thus contributing immensely to women empowerment! The makers of the famous Lijjat Papad, is an organisation which symbolises the strength of a woman. Only women can become the members of the organisation.

In 2002, the “Businesswoman of the Year” award was given to “The Women Behind Lijjat Papad” at The Economic Times Awards for Corporate Excellence.

You know what cooking is not only used just for cooking what we or you do in kitchen but in other sense too. Like the phrase “what’s cooking” could be used for the kids planning for some kind of “shararat”.

And that’s true Lizzat is the great example of ‘Laghu udyog’ and a work for example by Rural women.

As I said in my previous comment “what’s Cooking” could be used in other sense too.

One example is this news, these girls were cooking this since I think quite long but everyone came to know only after when it’s cooked.

You must be wondering what was cooking? Check it out

    @Shubh
Best way to avoid the conflict is not to look at the process 😛
As doctors know, while kissing (french) thousands of germ x-fer takes place which may be harmful.. so no one ask doctor wheather it is unsafe..
